Course Description:
“A vigilant, well-trained caregiver is the best prevention for pediatric tracheostomy and ventilator emergencies” This fast-paced, college-level course is designed to provide training to the advanced practice nurse in caring for pediatric ventilator-dependent children in their homes or who are preparing families to take their ventilator-dependent children home. It is a train-the-trainer course for nurse leaders – nurse managers, directors of nursing, nurse educators, ICU nurses - who, after completing the course, will be able to train frontline nurses to provide safe, effective care. Completion of the course will enhance the clinical expertise and professional confidence of direct care nurses and will provide the necessary tools for proper training to their mentors. Included are the following aspects of care:

Day 1
Introduction to training methodology for:
•Anatomy/physiology of the pediatric respiratory system
• Proper pediatric respiratory assessment
•Tracheostomy – purposes, conditions and care
•Proper, step-wise response to tracheostomy emergencies
•Psycho-social aspects of home care
•A parent perspective of home care nurses

Day 2
Introduction to training methodology for:
•Mechanical ventilation theory
•Operation of the ventilator and assistive coughing devices
•Hands-on Ventilator Lab – applying circuits, programming settings, avoiding alarms, responding to alarms.

Overnight accommodations are available at the conference center and there are many hotels in the area. The conference center website is
www.acc-villanovaconferencecenter.com. All arrangements and charges for overnight accommodations are the sole responsibility of the conference attendee.

Note: The $360.00 fee is NOT refundable under any circumstances and nurses must attend the training to receive course materials. No exceptions. The classes are limited to 35 students, fill rapidly, and students who cancel at the last minute cannot be replaced.

Ventilator Assisted Children’s Home Program is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the PA State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
